High Five Friday!!!

Hello everyone!

How is you week so far? I can’t believe how fast time flies when I am being busy (and I have to admit quite happy lately 😀 :D). I think I thrive on being busy and doing all the things I love! Ok, so this week was pretty awesome with many things happening. It took me a while to find the five best (i really wanted to cheat and tell you about all of them LOL but I wont).

Screen Shot 2016-04-22 at 10.32.19

So let’s see what I’ve been up to 🙂

*5 PICTURES = 5000 WORDS FROM THE WEEK*

  1. I tried yet another AWESOME WeTRAIN session, this time with Stevie, at 6:30am on the park. There is no better way to start your day, than an exciting, butt-kicking workout. Blasting music, squats, push ups and sprints sounds like my kind of morning 😀
  2. Ok, I think my amazing yogi friend Angela over at Happy Fit Mama would be so proud of me 🙂 Look at my Crow pose in my very first yoga session EVER! Now THAT is high five worthy 😉
  3. Last week’s 11.2 mile long run was (not totally) but pretty close to a unicorn run! It felt pretty good and I even sped up the pace considerably for the last 2.5 miles. Happy smiles = good run!
  4. I got a great opportunity to join the Castle, a new gym/swimming/ community centre which is only 10 minutes away from work, and try out for a few months! It is brand new and very nice! So be prepared for a lot of sweaty treadmill and not only pictures!
  5. Finally, how you can turn a bad day into a great day. Most of you probably saw on FB that i got a flat tire, more like my tire exploded during rush hour in the bike highway… So not fun. Had to lock it to a pole and walk the rest 3 miles to work. Same day my favourite jeans ripped (at work…), got on the wrong bus (more walking…) and the subway was out of service… BUT still it end up being an awesome day! @mymamus met with me and tried to fix my bike and the plan was for me to ride it home and he ‘ll get the bus. Well, that didnt work out… the tire was also messed up along with the inner tube so even thought I could wheel the bike I could not ride it. Which means WE had to push it home… Yup all 4.5 miles of it… But it was so much fun! It ended up being an impromptu date where we talked, laughed and ate snacks on the side of the road. I swear this guy is like my knight in a shinning armour sometimes 😛 Cheesy I know… but I am so grateful that he likes me 😉 with all my craziness! All it takes is one person for your day to get better 🙂 I did have a bad day but my my point??

SEEING THE BRIGHT SIDE AND BEING POSITIVE IS A CHOICE! MAKE IT!

High Five Friday!!!

Hi friends 😀

Friday is here and I couldn’t be more excited about it! I had an excellent (super active and busy) week and I can’t wait for an even better weekend!

*5 PICTURES = 5000 WORDS FROM THE WEEK*

  1. This week week was a very different week commuting wise 😉 I cycled in three times, run one time and rode on the subway one time (desperately needed to give my legs a rest…). Not too bad for my first midweek 6:00 am run 😉 My piggies and I (yes, i do go around wearing those earbuds and yes little kids laugh and point at them 😛 ) did pretty well even though my legs were super stiff from two days of cycling 20km every day.
  2. I GOT MY VERY FIRST RUN-RISE! I think my friend Angela over at Happy Fit Mama would be very proud of me! I followed her advice from here and it was actually breathtaking! Thanks Angela 😀
  3. This is what happens when you bumped into a colleague on your way running to to work in the morning – but of course you asked them to take your picture instead of your traditional selfie… and they stay wondering how the hell can you still rock a smile after running 6 miles at 6:00 am… We, runners, are a crazy breed 😉
  4. THIS salad! No words necessary… lettuce, sweet corn and avocado loaded with chicken! Yum!
  5. Seriously, who needs a chocolate cake (or chocolate anything…) when you can have pineapple AND the sweetest (no joke) mango I’ve had since I left NY! Worth every bit the mess I made eating the flesh right of the pit over the sink LOL – ladylike down the drain literally…LOL!!!

Screen Shot 2016-04-22 at 10.32.19

*5 everyday things to tick off my  “want to achieve this week” list*

  1. I am in bed by 10:20pm the latest!!!! WIN! I fell so much better and getting up (5-5:30am) feeling rested and way happier.
  2. Made it through my first week cycling to work (in ONE piece! hahaha…) 😉
  3. I was active and worked out every day, and the best part, I had so much fun doing it!
  4. I have unplugged by 8pm EVERY single night this week… Its amazing how much more relaxed you are if you put all your electronic away and just chill before bed…
  5. Food was 80% on point 😉 not too bad considering I was constantly hungry due to my new found cycling habit.

Let me know your awesome plans for this weekend 🙂

High Five Friday & 5 things I will commit to this month!

Fri – YAY!!! 😀 😀

I have come to really ❤ Fridays even more the past few weeks! Knowing that i’ll meet up with my running buddy Corey and we ‘ll hit the streets and get to see a run-rise has me all excited EVERY single time! I feel like my friend Angela over at Happy Fit Mama with her INCREDIBLE sunrise pictures 😉

Screen Shot 2016-04-22 at 10.32.19

So here we are 🙂 recap of my week and sharing of all my positives vibes ❤ ❤

*5 PICTURES = 5000 WORDS FROM THE WEEK*

  1. Ok I know you guys are probably fed up of seeing my new fitted shoes on the blog every time LOL 😛 but this time I wont rave about how awesome they feel and how my running has changed cause of them… This time I will share another game changer for me 🙂 So, backstory: Lately I’ve been having increasing bunion pain, even Paula Radcliffe  had this exact issue (more serious than mine though…)! so after quite a bit of research THIS is one way I found to cope with it! I tried a few runs with my shoelaces tied like this (see how I ve skipped a hole and I’ve used the other side to compensate???) and it made a world of difference 🙂 Not pain free yet but there isn’t as much pressure on it!
  2. After my long run last Sunday with my running buddy Sabine we ended up at her back yard BBQ-ing meat and veggies!! Nothing better after 15km 😀 Also good luck, this weekend she is running the Dublin half marathon!
  3. I’ve been doing some really cool science this past weeks 🙂 🙂 Nothing better than experiments that work WHOO-HOO!!! Unfortunately the fashion related memo never made it to my lab LOL! Yes, this is my “working attire” 😉 😛
  4. Next AWESOME feeling for today?? Long run already in the books and it’s not even the weekend! LOVING IT!!! Thanks Corey, I really enjoy our runs 🙂
  5. And the BEST of THE BEST that happened this week…. I GOT MY BIKE!!!! YAY!!! It is the first time in my life i am getting a brand new bike – due to countless cousins and one brother I always had good bikes but never new ones. My new Apollo Virtue 2015 is pretty awesome! Yup, that would be a neon pink-purplish helmet on my head … @mymamus insisted that neon pink is safer than navy blue – more reflective and people can see you better – but I still think he just enjoys making me wear pink in any possible occasion!

So all and all this was a pretty rad week 🙂 Can’t wait for the weekend though cause i am in desperate need of some extra sleep!

10471559_10204042676729919_7045692427408033866_o

Oh this… Just a random picture of my favourite place on earth 😀 Summer reminder!

*5 things I am committing to do in August*

  1. Commute to work EVERY day with my new bike (maybe not Fridays if I had a long run in the morning)
  2. Unplug (phone,PC etc) and be in bed by 9:30-10pm. I used to be really good at it and my 5am wake up call was pretty easy. But I’ve been going t bed quite late lately (LOL) and I find it extra hard to wake up and be productive and not tired…
  3. Stop my silly yo-yo like eating habits!!! Jeezz this one is killing me! I became an emotional eater since I quite smoking a few years ago. If I am sad/stressed/upset I eat… And my “healthy eating ” goes down the drain. Well not anymore! I am going to commit to eating as healthy as I can and everything in moderation (I am unable to diet since I refuse to physically deprive my self from food!)
  4. Be more mindful during my day 🙂
  5. Never miss two days of working out in a row! It really screws up my momentum if i do this!

So anything exciting and awesome happened this week for you guys?? Please do share! There is no such thing as too much positiveness!!

Anything you ‘d like to commit to this month? New habits?

High Five Friday!

Hello everyone 😀

It is Friday!!! Yay!!!

Like every Friday let’s connect with Angela over at Happy Fit Mama, spread the good vibes 😉 and recap my (pretty full) week!

*5 PICTURES = 5000 WORDS FROM THE WEEK*

  1. This is what happens when the Greek in me awakens 🙂 Greek salad w/t feta cheese and traditional pastitsio (greek lasagna)! I think my yiayia (grandmother) would be super proud!
  2. My new babies, Saucony rider9!!! These are the ones I am planning to run the Athens marathon in 🙂 They have a perfect fit!
  3. Since I had to work on Sunday I decided to run to work in the morning! My first (early) morning run was a success! I have to admit it sets the pace for an awesome day 🙂
  4. Got a video gait analysis done to have my shoes fitted on my feet 🙂 It has been an awesome game changer!! Read all about it here.
  5. New favourite snack? Alpro soya plain yogurt with bananas (or blueberries)  and a little honey 🙂 Winner!!

Screen Shot 2016-04-22 at 10.32.19

*5 THINGS YOU DON’T KNOW ABOT ME*

  1. I am oh so STUBBORN – took after my dad on this one 😉 – If I want to do something, especially have it done my way, there is no way I’ll back out… It is not always a good thing but it has turned out to be quite useful sometimes 😉
  2. I had been married in the past 🙂 Long story short, one of those a little rushed decisions, but don’t regret it a bit. This marriage left me with a great friend (my ex husband). Not all people are meant to be couples/together but that doesn’t mean there can’t be a good friendship  🙂
  3. The fact that I am a strong willed and strong minded independent woman, I owe it to Screen Shot 2016-07-29 at 09.30.01.pngthree women in my life, my mum and my two grandmothers. I can see aspects of them in me as I grow up and I couldn’t be happier! Sadly, the one of the left isn’t with us any more and I miss her every single day… I got my name from her, Eleni. This woman could cook!! And she taught me most of what I know…As for my other grandma, I swear she is the most brave and strong person I ‘ve ever known! She is been through so many things (wars, famine, being a widow) and still she is healthy as a horse and always has a smile on her face! I am very grateful to have women like them in my family to look up to…
  4. I used to have two guinea pigs, when I was in Glasgow and they actually flew with meScreen Shot 2016-07-29 at 09.44.14.png to New York 🙂 They were the funniest little furry babies and I loved them very much. they aren’t with us anymore but I always remember them.. Their names were Boufos (which means silly) and Torres!
  5. I used to play paintball back in NY! And I ❤ it !! It is such an adrenaline rush!!! FYI this is NOT a real gun – just a really awesome paintball reali – looking like gun 🙂

Screen Shot 2016-07-29 at 09.43.13

So this is my high five Friday 😀 😀 I hope you guys have an awesome weekend!! @mymamus and I are going on a date tonight to an awesome event 🙂 where a friend of mine is performing! More about it soon!

Happy Friday!

High Five Friday & Vacation READY!

[MAJOR EXCITEMENT ALERT!!]

Hi friends 😀

Not only it’s Friday but it’s official the first day of our VACATION!! Yup, you guessed right excitement level is sky high! So let’s connect with my good friend Angela over at Happy Fit Mama and get both the weekend and my vacation off to an awesome start!

(fyi I really REALLY love “High Five Fridays” so i am actually posting this one from the airport! Gotta ❤ free WiFi at the business lounge! )

*5 PICTURES = 5000 WORDS FROM THE WEEK*

  1. Vacation READY! I love those mint pair of shorts!! and of course my scarf obsession continues ❤
  2. Lunch at the Lufthansa business lounge before our flight (which is already delayed about an hour 😦 ) not too shabby 😉 Food was delicious!
  3. BBQ with my running buddy and my favourite man last Sunday! Totally out of the blue, I love those not scheduled impromptu dates with friends!
  4. We opted for a Greek – German night – with plenty of souvlaki (skewers of meat/veggies), grilled haloumi cheese, and homemade tzatziki (yogurt sauce with garlic and cucumber)
  5. So, last weekend my friend invited me as a plus one to a workout event at one of Active Virgin gyms here in London. Even though the workout was totally disappointing (awfully organised and tottaly only for publicity since there were very few fitness related people there) but the open day at the gym’s spa and a few Negronis later  this gal was very happy again 😉

So these were some of the most memorable moments of last week!

*5 Things I packed to keep up with my fitness/running game*

So, one thing you should know about me, i ALWAYS pack last minute! I mean I usually know what i need but since i am not telekinetic just thinking about it ain’t gonna cut it!  So this is the reason why there are not many pictures of my suitcase at all…

  1. Yes, this is my blender! Call me crazy but I have become so dependent on my morning protein smoothie that i refuse to not have it! Also this is so small and weights less than 2 lbs, so why not eh!?!
  2. My favourite running outfit + 2 more (just in case LOL) and my running sneakers
  3. This awesome and very compact resistance band assortment is PERFECT for travelling
  4. 14 days = 14 scoops of my protein powder (and pre workout no photo of it sorry!)
  5. My new baby!! I don’t actually have it yet since it arrived in Athens before me 🙂 I asked a friend to bring it over from the States (save a little money on extremely expensive shipping costs!)

I promise I’ ll do a full post on how to keep up your fitness game while on vacation and also have fun doing it! I also promise tons of pictures during our stay in Greece!!!

Have an awesome Friday and weekend everyone!!! ❤

High Five Friday!

Hi friends 🙂

Friday already?!?! Unbelievable… Where did the week go? I swear this week went by so fast! Ok, the weekend is almost here so let’s get this show on the road! Linking up with Angela over at Happy Fit Mama like every Friday and spread ALL the good vibes around!

*5 PICTURES = 5000 WORDS FROM THE WEEK*

  1. [NEW OBSESSION ALERT] –> This coconut almond butter is absolutely the BEST thing my taste buds have tasted in a while! It’s pretty hard to keep my self from not finishing the jar in one got! (not an affiliated post just love the stuff!)
  2. Movie date night 😀 ❤ with this amazing guy! He was so excited to see the new Captain America and I surprised him by getting us tickets for the movie! It’s a pretty good movie as well – a little long, around 2.5 hours, but a good one if you like comic book heroes!
  3. Managed to get ALL of my 5:00 am (and one at 6:00am) morning workouts in this week! Yay!!! – Ok, i might have had some help on Monday morning 😉 I don’t enjoy taking pre-workout supplements and really don’t like the taste but some times it is necessary when you need an extra kick… (not an affiliated post just … well it’s the one that has worked for me).
  4. This mornings workout… why is it high five worthy you ask? Well, because for the first time in a long time I got up and I was actually looking forward to working up a sweat! I think my body is getting back to enjoying my old routine! 😀 Yay!
  5. This new set of resistance bands 🙂 Great value for money and much needed. The one I had already was too short for some of the leg/pilates exercises I wanted to try. Also this is so nicely compact that is definitely coming with me on vacation! Speaking of which, here is something that counts for 5 on its own!!!Screen Shot 2016-05-27 at 08.57.38.png

–> TICKETS ARE BOOKED! We are going to visit our friends and family in GREECE in exactly two weeks!!!

Major excitement 😀 😀 I am so looking forward to this! I promise you a lot of pictures! We have a great plan to make sure we both get the necessary rest but also see everyone!

Well now this… is definitely a lot of high fives worth news right?!?!? LOL 😀

Screen Shot 2016-04-22 at 10.32.19

*5 things I am planning on doing while on vacation*

(don’t hate 😉 I am not rubbing it in, I’m just way overexcited! This vacation has been so overdue!)

  1. Rest, run, sleep, eat, relax and repeat!
  2. Spent some quality time with family and friends, and also @mymamus of course.
  3. Don’t use my vacation as an excuse to be completely unhealthy… Granted the occasional treat is understandable but i am I’ve worked too hard to be were I’m at to not keep it up!
  4. Put in as many runs by the sea as I can and see the sunrise! I have to admit I’m not a big beach person, like sunbathing, swimming etc. And I hate the sand – it gets everywhere YIKES – but that doesn’t mean I don’t appreciate the beauty of it 😉
  5. Eat tons of my mum’s chicken soup!!!! It’s summer you say? And hot? And chicken soup isn’t the kind of food to eat on vacation? Well, let me tell yo something! If there is anything I’ve missed more than my mum it’s her chicken soup!!! It is my favourite thing in the world! It’s not your typical broth-y chicken noodle soup. She makes it with that greek thing called “avgolemono” which means eggs and lemon… and its creamy and it has rice in it!  😀

Well, that’s all from me this morning! I hope you all have an awesome Friday and an even better weekend! It is a long weekend here and on Monday my May 10k race is on! Happy days!

Any races this weekend? What are your plans guys?

High Five Friday & Spinal Cord Injury Awareness Day!

Hi friends 🙂

Screen Shot 2016-04-22 at 10.32.19

Yup, it’s Friday!!! High Fives all around for having an awesome work week and an even better weekend coming! So let’s connect with my friend Angela over at Happy Fit Mama and get this party started!!

*5 PICTURES = 5000 WORDS FROM THE WEEK*

  1. THIS! I found this picture yesterday and I really felt that it was so true ❤
  2. Had a nice tempo run last Sunday, and even though I didn’t feel my best it still put a huge SMILE on my face!
  3. So ready for my next race! London 10,000 has one of the prettiest routes through two of the biggest parks of London! Can’t wait for it… Countdown is a little more than a week! Also if you guys want to help out with spinal cord injury research you can donate here on my fundraising page for the race 😀 Every little bit counts!
  4. My first time at the hospital working with spinal cord injured patients! It was an incredible experience and I am grateful that I am getting this opportunity!
  5. Ok, 1 photo = 2 things here (maybe i cheat a little LOL!). This breakfast is a new staple: oats, skim milk, bananas, honey and cinnamon. And yes I do keep all that in my desk food stash… And I absolutely love my new notebook!! It is a new project I’ve been working on called “Daily Gratitude”. After reading about how helpful it is to write down all the things you are grateful for, I decided to give it a try… You know with our lives going so fast – sometimes too fast – I felt like I forget the things that really matter you know? Small victories and happy moments… I ‘ll do a full post about it in a few days and let you know how is it coming along!

Since today is Spinal Cord Injury Awareness Day… Screen Shot 2016-05-20 at 10.30.01

*5 facts about Spinal Cord Injury*

  1. Spinal cord injury primarily affects young adults
  2. 50,000 people live with paralysis in the UK and Ireland
  3. The cost to the nation (UK only) is estimated at £1 billion per annum
  4. There are currently no effective treatments for spinal cord injury
  5. Spinal cord injury can affect anyone at any time

The infographics below show all the info and stats about spinal cord injury for both the USA and the UK. Have a look and you ‘ll be amazed by the numbers…

Screen Shot 2016-05-20 at 09.54.27

Screen Shot 2016-05-20 at 09.54.01

Spinal Cord Injuries can happen to anyone at any moment… and there is no treatment for it (yet…) but I promise we are all working as hard as we can to get there. If there is one thing that I learnt from my recent visit to the spinal cord injury unit at the hospital, was that these people are heroes! Everyday heroes! Both the patients and all the staff that works with them. The put in so much effort into being able to gain their life back and be  independent members of this society again… you know one thing that I was told, and it will stay with me for ever? One of the therapists said to me “we can’t fix these people but we will have them ready by the time you guys figure out how to beat this thing!”

If you want to know more about spinal cord injuries you can visit the spinal-research page here.

As for me, yes I am still an idealist when it comes to my work (some people call me a dreamer) 🙂 If my work helps even one person to have a better life, to take the smallest step, move his little finger… It is all worth it! Scientists (in academia) are underpaid and overworked in most places around the world but if you ask any one of us, it’s not about the money. It’s about helping others and trying to make this world a better place in our own way…

Have an awesome weekend everyone!

Best,

PS: to all my Greek runner friends don’t miss our favourite (and only) running TV show tonight, like every Friday at 22:00 (local time)! KEEP RUNNING!
