Decathlon 5km Running Series

Hello people 😀

Hope you are off to a great start this week!

So as promised, this is what happen last Sunday morning on the Decathlon 5km running series at Surrey Quays…

Having had a very active (and busy week) and having done my 12 miles long run on Friday, when I decided to join my friend Corey for a 5km we both thought “Ok, we’ll take it easy…” and THIS was the exact conversation that went on the day before the race after our yoga class …

Screen Shot 2016-08-23 at 11.08.48.png

So with that in mind we arrived at Canada water station with a little less than an hour to spare before the race. We went there looking like the first picture and then 15 minutes later we were all dressed up in our bright (very nice and breathable) yellow Decathlon race t-shirts and ready to roll!!!! (I don’t know many people who get THAT excited to wake up at 7:30am on a Sunday to go an hour away to run twice around a park LOL but these are runners for you… 😉 We are a bizarre breed!)

I have to admit, I LOVED the race! First of all it was totally free, well-organised, not massive queues and very helpful staff. Totally loved the (free) snack and fuelling table i think every race should have one!

There was a good amount of people of all ages – i love seeing families running together! Mums with toddlers and dads pushing strollers, I always think it is super cute.

Before the start of the race we all gathered to the start line and had a brief warm up session, then counted down from 5 and then we were off…

Screen Shot 2016-08-22 at 06.49.21

Bright yellow and pink shirts flooded Southwark park! What a great atmosphere! And of course both Corey and myself got so carried away that we totally forgot about our “having fun deal”…

Screen Shot 2016-08-22 at 06.45.13

We both run a sub 25 minutes (even though I am not quite sure that was an exact 5km… so this one doesn’t go on my PB list just yet!) and really pushed it at the end sprinting to the finish line.

After the race we walked to the store to pick up our goodie bags -included power bars and drinks, and just have a look around! Well I have to tell you I was Screen Shot 2016-08-23 at 11.23.59.pngSHOCKED!! I can not believe I was in this country for 10 whole months and never knew about this store! Where do I start? The amount of sports stuff and variety – HUGE (from running to climbing and from canoeing to paddle boarding)! The people – super friendly AND knowledgable! Prices?? I wont even mention it! Total bargains compared to prices I have seen around town in other places!

I am so going back there soon! They have all you might need for cycling and as you all remember I do need a new tire.. 😉

So all and all it was a great day with a lot of fun 🙂 I totally recommend it to any of my UK friends. They have a few more races coming up in different locations around the country so look it up here and definitely register!

Screen Shot 2016-08-23 at 11.33.40.png

We might not have taken it easy as promised but we still pushed each other to the best of our abilities. I am grateful to have found such awesome people to run/workout with as it isn’t so easy in a very busy and crowded city like London!

Athens Marathon – Training log Week #8

Hi friends 🙂

Please allow me a tiny freak out before we continue! It is already week 9 for my training which means less than 10 weeks till my first marathon!!!!! Aaaaahhh!!!!!!

Ok, ok, ok… I am good now 😛 I promise that was more excitement (and fear) than anything else!

I have to admit I am very pleased with the way training has been going lately. So let’s see how thing went this past week:

Monday: OFF

Tuesday: great speed work today on the treadmill at the Castle 8×200 RI 1:30 (walking rest interval) and then I had the not so brilliant idea of getting in a HIIT workout with my friend Elle and WeTRAIN.

Wednesday: Morning run to work! 6.6 miles and this gal was super happy! It felt really good!

Screen Shot 2016-08-19 at 12.59.27.png

Thursday: Another really cool workout with Stevie from WeTRAIN at 6:30 am! I was very brave to actually bike there and then to work. Where of course I got a flat tire… Oh the joy! And then walked about 4.5 miles that afternoon pushing the bike home.

Friday: An awesome long run with my amazing friend Corey! Hit 12.4 miles (20km) and then man up and went to work 😀 It was fun! I was “riding” that long run before the weekend high all day long…

Screen Shot 2016-08-21 at 18.39.30.png

Saturday: This one was quite special I have to admit! A pretty amazing WeTRAIN yoga session, with Katie and a complementary Bellini afterwards for some much needed catching up 🙂

Screen Shot 2016-08-21 at 18.30.51

Sunday: Had a really cool sub 25 minutes 5km race 🙂 I wont say more since I can’t wait to write a full recap later this week 😉 Just look at this awesome picture —> a great attempt of Corey to get a selfie while we were speeding away!

Screen Shot 2016-08-22 at 06.45.13.png

Weekly mileage: 24.4

Total mileage: 147.7

Weekly cross-training session: 3 (plus cycling)

Athens Marathon – Training log Week #7

Hello everyone!!

First of all HAPPY MONDAY 😀 I just love Mondays (granted, not as much as Fridays 😉 ), it’s like a small new beginning… I hope everyone had a pretty awesome weekend. Here things were pretty quite. I had quite a bit of housework to do (cleaning, laundry etc… Oh the joys of being an adult 😛 ) and @mymamus was totally busy finishing up his latest work project.

So let’s see how was training this week. Official countdown to the marathon is:

92 DAYS!!!

Monday: Cycled to and from work (20km) for the first time.

Tuesday: My traditional WeTrain workout in the park 🙂 Dear Elle kicked our butts this time but we still ❤ her a lot! Have you seen anyone THAT happy after 50 minutes of kick ass training?!??! LOL, yes we are THAT crazy 😉

Screen Shot 2016-08-13 at 18.42.28.png

Also, cycled to work and then to the park before getting back home.

Wednesday: I run to work in the morning, 6 miles at 6:00 am! It was pretty wonderful. This was my very first RUN-RISE 😀 😀

Ok, this one I have to say it out loud… I do hate the treadmill BUT not as much as I used to :O (said no runner ever!) I met up with my (work-) running buddy Kim and we hit the treadmills for a 5x1000m RI 3:00 workout. Why I loved the treadmill? Did PERFECT negative spilts (and I think that was the fastest I ‘ve gone in… EVER)!

Splits: 5:27 (11 mph), 5:13(11.5 mph), 5:00(12 mph), 4:45(12.5 mph), 4:36 (13 mph) – this last one was an absolute killer but Kim is (ridiculously fit and) the most motivational person I know… She kept telling me we can do this, thanks buddy 😉

Screen Shot 2016-08-13 at 18.51.26.png

Oh and did I mention the (killer) abs workout we did at the end?? Yup, you guessed that one right… This was so NOT my brilliant idea! 😛

Friday: Cycled to work (20km) and back and then took the rest of the evening off.

Saturday: Good ol’ speed work for the piggies and I 🙂 6×100, 8×400 RI 2:00 in the park since the track shuts down at 7pm and i didn’t manage to get out of the house before 7:30pm. I did catch a beautiful sunset though… Photo doesn’t do it any justice.

Screen Shot 2016-08-15 at 07.23.58

Sunday: Long run day 😀 Had a pretty quite and uneventful 11.2 miles (18km) (me likes uneventful runs… it means you can zone out, listen to your music/podcast, and do your thing). I felt good the whole way and manage to run the last two miles considerable faster than the rest of the run (started of at around 9:50-10:05/mile and finish up with 8:30/mile).

Screen Shot 2016-08-15 at 07.22.32

I went all the way to Battersea park, which is stunning I have to admit, and then looped back. The highlight of my run is seeing the pagoda (let me rephrase… the HUGE pagoda with the golden Buddhas!) So pretty… It was pretty clouded so the pic looks a little funny (plus a n IG filter to actually brighten it up 😉 ).

Screen Shot 2016-08-15 at 07.22.50

The next highlight of my day (apart from a good friend coming over to dinner 😛 ) was my very first yoga class with the lovely people from WeTrain! I ‘ll post a full review soon since I have tons of things to write about my experience 😀 but one thing is for sure! A yoga session after an 11 mile run is pure bliss for a sore body!

Screen Shot 2016-08-15 at 07.22.42

Oh and did I mention a 30′ cycling to and from the yoga class?? LOL! Yes Sunday was a full and extremely active day! So grateful I am healthy and able to go about my day and do all the things i enjoy!!

Weekly mileage: 23.2

Total mileage: 123.23

Weekly cross-training session: 2 (plus cycling)

Athens Marathon – Training log Week #6

[Minor freak our ALERT]

My very first marathon is in 96 days…. Just give me a minute to digest that we are already in double digits and then I’ll happily move on to my post….

– slow breath in and out exercises –

Screen Shot 2016-08-08 at 07.49.39.png

Ok, I am back 🙂 Hi everyone!

Let’s see how marathon training went for me this past week, shall we? Not too shabby if you ask me 😉

Thursday: what I really meant to do was 8×400 RI 2:00, what I actually did was 4×800 RI 2:00. Now don’t ask why, I just realised what I was doing when I was almost done… Well I guess that is one of the downhills of not doing repeats on the track but honestly I don’t mind 😉

Friday: 9.2 miles long run along the river with my running buddy Corey 🙂 I absolutely ❤ this run! It felt perfect!! Can’t wait for longer long runs!

Screen Shot 2016-08-08 at 07.33.28.png

Saturday: had an awesome bootcamp HIIT style class at 1Rebel along with many blogger friends 🙂 It was really cool and I swear I haven’t sweat like that in a long time! Full review on it will be on the blog soon!!

Screen Shot 2016-08-06 at 20.38.03.png

Also after the class, the weather was waaay to nice to pass on a run so i did 5x1000m RI 3:00 mins repeats in the park 🙂

Sunday: now this was not a smart move on my part… I did a slow (and supposedly easy) 7 miles. I STRUGGLED through every single step of those 7 miles… The heat and humidity was awful along with a very wrong state of mind and the fact that I didn’t realize it had been 4 hours since I had breakfast and I didn’t have a snack before my run… Well, we live and learn right?

Screen Shot 2016-08-08 at 07.39.16.png

All and all i am quite happy with how this week ended. It didn’t start off great as you ‘ve probably noticed I didn’t do any exercise what so ever between Monday and Wednesday but kicked into gear on Thursday 😉 I need to work on spacing out my workouts better! So this is my goal for next week 😀

Weekly mileage: 19.70

Total mileage: 100.03

Weekly cross-training session: 1 (plus some cycling)

Let me know how you training is going guys 🙂 Anything in particular you are struggling with? What are you currently training for?

Train your BODY along with your MIND – Marathon Training

Hello 😀 😀

-I have not run a marathon YET… I will in 13 weeks. And I am scared, anxious, afraid… but also excited and looking forward to it. All the things I am writing here is just what I do to get through, is tips and hacks and advice that might help fellow marathoners-to-be who are at the same boat with me. As for all of you my fellow marathoners ANY advice, anything you might want to add to share the wisdom you’ve gain through that 26.2 miles…is more than welcome 🙂 –

As my coach always says: “Visualise! If you can see it, think of it and dream it then you have already done it!”

Screen Shot 2016-08-03 at 11.30.25.png

So we all know that “mental  training” is just as important as physical training when it comes to running a marathon. But it is quite hard to do – getting sucked into training runs, tempo runs, speed work…Numbers, numbers, numbers… How long did I run for? How fast did I go? Is that enough? These are only a few of the questions we ask ourselves after (or during) EVERY training run.

But sometimes, dropping it down a notch is what our mind needs! Our minds need as much (if not more) training as our bodies. Because as most of very successful runners have said in the past, a marathon is the last 10km of the distance. Then and there, when your physical reserves are depleted and your MENTAL strength and training has to kick in to to keep you going…

  1. This is what my coach told me when I asked how.SET YOUR GOAL AND SEE IT EVERY DAY… THIS IS WHEN YOU’LL NEVER FEEL TIRED.Screen Shot 2016-04-06 at 08.55.28
  2.  Study the route.Find a video of the route or even better visit a part or all of it if you are local. Know what’s ahead and leave NO room for surprises. There is nothing worse (I know from my last half) thinking you are almost there and then wondering where the heck did this 1km steep uphill came from during your last few miles.Screen Shot 2016-05-31 at 16.11.50
  3. Find what motivates you 🙂 Is it a quote? A picture? A person? Display it somewhere where you can see it and be reminded of it constantly! For me is a little bracelet with out team’s moto on it! NOTHING IS IMPOSSIBLE! Given to me by my coach.Screen Shot 2016-06-16 at 17.46.59
  4. Cross-train. Not only for the physical benefits of it but to also give your brain a rest from running. To get the chance to do something else you love and to avoid a mental burnt out.

Screen Shot 2016-05-06 at 07.50.33

So these are my hacks whenever things get tough during my training cycle!

What do you guys do to mentally prep for your race?

Athens Marathon – Training log Week #4

We are already in Week 5 out 18 of training :O … Wow!! Time flies!

So I’ll just keep it short and sweet today since I am CRAZY busy with work for the next 2-3 days.

Friday: 12 miles (actually it was 11.46) long run along with my new running buddy Corey. It was her first time running with someone else and I think she liked it 🙂 Read all about her take on our long run here.

Screen Shot 2016-07-25 at 07.47.59.png

Happy faces on Friday morning —> Long run was done BEFORE the weekend! What an awesome feeling! Of course we are planning the same for this week 😉

Screen Shot 2016-07-22 at 10.28.33

Sunday: Since I had to work this weekend (oh the joy of research….) I thought I might as well run to work Sunday morning for a (slow) shake out 6 mile run. Did about an hour or so, quite relaxed!

Screen Shot 2016-07-25 at 07.51.32.png

I know, I know…. only managed 2 out of my four runs this week…

Well I decided not to beat myself over it! I am doing my best to fit in everything and with work being super challenging these days that was the best I could do 🙂 I know I’ll do better next week!

Weekly mileage: 17.45

Total mileage: 62.57

Weekly cross-training session: 0

I have a training session planned for next weekend along with some friends and I am really looking forward to that! Also I decided some spinning this evening would be perfect for my tired legs 😉

Have an awesome week everyone 🙂 🙂

Athens Marathon – Training log Week #3

Hello friends 🙂 – oh and happy Monday… I guess…. zzzzzzzzz

Mood of the day: I need ALL the coffee right about now!!!

Yes I do ❤ my little French press so much! Especially on days like today… You know that feeling when (stupidly) you sleep in on a Sunday, and you wake up at 11am?? And then Sunday night is a rerun of the walking dead for you?!?!? That… I didn’t manage to sleep till about 2:30am last night…and yes I was up at 6:00am (I confess, i did hit the snoozing button about 10 times ….)

Well, now i am all happy, sipping my coffee, writing this post and contemplating on my training this past week 😀 It was such a step up from last week’s training! Still struggling to fit a little cross-training in there but I’ll make it happen I am sure!

Wednesday: 5km Tempo run 🙂

Screen Shot 2016-07-18 at 07.13.44

Thursday: 6 miles (almost 10km) running home from work 🙂

Screen Shot 2016-07-18 at 07.13.37

Because honestly THIS —> was exactly what I needed after a 12 hour work day full of experiments! It’s like with every step I can empty my head and by the time I get home I am totally stress free! I mean come on look at my silly smiley face ——->

Screen Shot 2016-07-18 at 07.13.29

Saturday: Long run #2 in the books 10.3 miles (17km)… Now this deserves a post on its own! It was one tough run… BUT it did give me some much needed perspective! Such as:

1.Apply sunblock E-V-E-R-Y-W-H-E-R-E (oh and evenly)… No comment please… Ouch!

Screen Shot 2016-07-16 at 19.32.02

2. Never EVER underestimate the heat (and humidity) in London. 78F (26C) feels like 95F (35C)!!!! I got so dehydrated I had to stop at a gas station and buy myself a two litre water bottle – half to drink and the other half to pour over my head….

3. IT IS OK TO WALK! I can stress this one enough…. Between miles 5-7 I swear I felt terrible. If I was anywhere near my home I would have just quit… I ended up walking a little bit more than 3/4 of a mile at this point! I felt like such a failure… but after some water and a 5 minute break (maybe a few tears) and a phone call to @mymamus,I decided to keep going! And I did finish it! My plan was to run to work (I had a few things to check on) from home and take the long route along the river, which by the way is absolutely stunning on a sunny (maybe too sunny) day…

Screen Shot 2016-07-18 at 07.14.07

4. Be proud for yourself! I did see it through! Even though I made a lot of rookie mistakes and I seriously miscalculated almost EVERYTHING about this run, I still finished with a smile!

Screen Shot 2016-07-18 at 07.13.13

5. Reward you say….. YUM! Well after all the ordeal I just mentioned I think a nice yummy brunch was well deserved 😉

Screen Shot 2016-07-18 at 07.13.59

Sunday: just a little shake out run to get those (seriously) tired legs moving 🙂 1.8 miles, hang out with my friend who is still recovering from surgery, and then power walk back the same distance 🙂

Screen Shot 2016-07-18 at 07.13.04

So there it is! This was more like a combination of a marathon training update and a weekend shenanigans post …

Weekly mileage: 21.03

Total mileage: 45.12

Weekly cross-training session: 0

I hope you guys have an awesome week ahead 😀

Athens Marathon – Training log Week #2

Hi friends!

Long time no post eeeh?? I know… I know 😦

Ok MAJOR confession time… This past week SUCKED! Like majorly sucked!! What happened? Life happened in all its glory… and threw quite a few curve balls our way… I promised I tried everything to stay positive, even forced my self into it but it just wasn’t happening!

Screen Shot 2016-07-12 at 07.30.52.png

Work was an absolute nightmare, my very close friend (and I only got very few of those) was in the hospital feeling awful all week after a major surgery she had and I got some pretty upsetting news from back home… Lovely ain’t it? So last week was lab, hospital, home and dead asleep. A lot of junk food was included and almost no running… So here it is my quite embarrassing week #2 stats 😦

Weekly mileage: 1.85

Total mileage: 24.9

Weekly cross-training session: 0

After speaking to a friend (one of my good running buddies) about all this and about how unhappy I’d been lately I have to admit I felt better. It’s good to know you have a few good people to lent you an ear to rant or a shoulder to cry on when needed.

Its true my motivation took quite the blow the past few days… but I am back and I am here to stay 🙂 Thanks to my awesome coach and her motivational emails and my good friends and @mymamus who are here right beside me ready to push and motivate me when need be!

Screen Shot 2016-07-12 at 07.31.03

Also how about a little Q&A?????

  • What do yo guys do to stay positive and motivated, especially when life turns a little upside down??
  • I have been seriously toying with the idea of trying this thing called “morning running” ….. All of you runners out there who love running in the morning and take all those magical run-rise pictures… HOW DO YOU DO IT?????

I promise I’ll check in with you guys more often 🙂 no more MIAs!

Have an awesome Tuesday!

Athens Marathon – Training log Week #1

Hi friends 😀

So week #1 from my marathon training is done! Exciting stuff! I have to admit it was a little harder than I thought it will be… It’s crazy how your fitness levels go out the window if you don’t train for a little while. I mean I was running during my vacation of course but it was only for fun! No paces, times, watch or even music, just me and the forest or the beach.

But let’s have a look at how this week went down, shall we?

Tuesday: 6.2 miles @10:23

Screen Shot 2016-07-04 at 08.03.59

Thursday: 5 x 1000 RI 3:00 (plus w/u and c/d of about 1 mile)

Saturday: Well this day went totally NOT as planned – thanks life 😉 I set out for my first long run but by the time I was 1/3 in I just felt so horrible!! Like I couldn’t take one more step… Head pounding, legs were heavy… So -obviously – I cut it short. Thought that didn’t happen before I tried really, really, hard to push through and keep going… But some times your body has other plans. So let’s try this again 🙂 Saturday: 3.38 miles @ 10:10 average pace. I think the reason for me feeling like this, was bad fuelling/timing. So I decided to not make the same mistake the next morning (fyi I only had one of those slices!)

Screen Shot 2016-07-04 at 08.03.48

Sunday: Long run #1 – 9.3 miles EASY @ 10:41 average pace. My brother is visiting us this week and he biked along with me for the whole 9.3 miles (15km).

Screen Shot 2016-07-04 at 08.03.32

According to my training plan (for the next 3 weeks at least) I will be running 4 times a week. And hoping to get in at least 1 session of cross-training a week, which didn’t exactly happen this week…

So let’s see how Week #2 will go!! Have an awesome Monday everyone!

Screen Shot 2016-01-18 at 12.40.40

Weekly mileage: 23.05

Total mileage: 23.05

Weekly cross-training session: 0
