Athens Marathon – Training log Week #3

Hello friends 🙂 – oh and happy Monday… I guess…. zzzzzzzzz

Mood of the day: I need ALL the coffee right about now!!!

Yes I do ❤ my little French press so much! Especially on days like today… You know that feeling when (stupidly) you sleep in on a Sunday, and you wake up at 11am?? And then Sunday night is a rerun of the walking dead for you?!?!? That… I didn’t manage to sleep till about 2:30am last night…and yes I was up at 6:00am (I confess, i did hit the snoozing button about 10 times ….)

Well, now i am all happy, sipping my coffee, writing this post and contemplating on my training this past week 😀 It was such a step up from last week’s training! Still struggling to fit a little cross-training in there but I’ll make it happen I am sure!

Wednesday: 5km Tempo run 🙂

Because honestly THIS —> was exactly what I needed after a 12 hour work day full of experiments! It’s like with every step I can empty my head and by the time I get home I am totally stress free! I mean come on look at my silly smiley face ——->

Saturday: Long run #2 in the books 10.3 miles (17km)… Now this deserves a post on its own! It was one tough run… BUT it did give me some much needed perspective! Such as:

1.Apply sunblock E-V-E-R-Y-W-H-E-R-E (oh and evenly)… No comment please… Ouch!

2. Never EVER underestimate the heat (and humidity) in London. 78F (26C) feels like 95F (35C)!!!! I got so dehydrated I had to stop at a gas station and buy myself a two litre water bottle – half to drink and the other half to pour over my head….

3. IT IS OK TO WALK! I can stress this one enough…. Between miles 5-7 I swear I felt terrible. If I was anywhere near my home I would have just quit… I ended up walking a little bit more than 3/4 of a mile at this point! I felt like such a failure… but after some water and a 5 minute break (maybe a few tears) and a phone call to @mymamus,I decided to keep going! And I did finish it! My plan was to run to work (I had a few things to check on) from home and take the long route along the river, which by the way is absolutely stunning on a sunny (maybe too sunny) day…

4. Be proud for yourself! I did see it through! Even though I made a lot of rookie mistakes and I seriously miscalculated almost EVERYTHING about this run, I still finished with a smile!

5. Reward you say….. YUM! Well after all the ordeal I just mentioned I think a nice yummy brunch was well deserved 😉

Sunday: just a little shake out run to get those (seriously) tired legs moving 🙂 1.8 miles, hang out with my friend who is still recovering from surgery, and then power walk back the same distance 🙂

Happy Mother’s Day & the rest of my birthday weekend!

Hi everyone 🙂

I’ve seen so many heart warming posts the past few days for mother’s day! So here is my 2 cents, because even though this weekend was pretty crazy busy I’d never forget my mum ❤

So Happy Mother’s day mum!! Thank you for ALWAYS being there for me and for being the most strong and brave person I know! Love you!! These are from my mum’s trip to New York last year! A time that I’d always cherish since we did so many mother – daughter things!! Like afternoon tea at the Plaza hotel 😉

And of course I wouldn’t want to forget, my @M&M_taleoftworuns, who is like a mama number 2 🙂 Happy mother’s Day to both of these incredible ladies who we ❤ very very much!

Oh, and just a few moments from my birthday weekend which was amazing! Many many thanks to @mymamus and my friends for making it so special!

Friday morning I went into work to see this ❤ My good friend and co -worker takes very seriously the blowing a candle/make a wish birthday ritual and she needed to make sure I will get mine! Yes, that is a yummy blueberry muffin which I ate later that day! It was my birthday after all…

Like the past 3 years – i am starting to believe it’s becoming a tradition – I spent my birthday in a symposium/conference again… The best part though? My poster (like a showcase for my work) got first prize among all the other postgraduates (aka around 80 posters) 😀 Woo Hoo!! Oh, and of course I got some beautiful roses (and tons of ice cream!) compliments of @mymamus 😉

Tapas for dinner and some wine, yum yum yum! And of course you can see clearly in my face my unconditional love for cupcakes!! ❤ ❤

Even though it was my birthday, I couldn’t not run/workout or somehow spent some of my energy… So I had my birthday run with my running buddy, great 8km with the sun shinning and a temperature at around 26C (70F) – in the UK this is considered a heat wave…no i am not joking!!! Well, i did get a little sunburned on my shoulders…

And then a 30′ weight lifting session since I still had quite a bit of energy left (and needed an excuse to eat to more ice cream cones LOL!)

Oh and finally, right before I passed out on Sunday night, I did a little bit of Sunday food prep! After all the splurge this weekend I am hoping for an extra healthy week!! As for those ground turkey stuffed eggplants, I promise I ‘ll share the recipe soon! They are sooooo good!!

What an AWESOME initiative: Park Run review!

Hi everyone 🙂

How’s your week going? Here things are as hectic as ever with all the work in the lab but no complaints at all! I am so happy I get to do something I love EVERY day!

So, a few weeks ago I attended a great event for bloggers here in London  where I met some really cool people! Among them was Sabine from My life My challenges blog, who she introduced me to this incredible and FREE initiative called Park Run 😀

What is Park Run?

Park Run is like a running club… but free. Where people from all around London gather in Screen Shot 2016-04-27 at 14.02.05the park at a specific time and run together. Either a 5k or a 10k depending on the park. You have to only register once and get your barcode which you can use in all the meets at every park. Then the Park Run volunteers will scan your barcode at the end and this is how you ‘ll get your official time for the route.

So last Saturday, I joinned Sabine and her friend for a 5k run at Brockwell park. The route was very pretty and scenic but quite hilly – which is great if you have actually trained to do hills … I haven’t … On a happier note though now i know where I can go to run some hill repeats 🙂 oh the joy #saidnorunnerever

Well without further ado here are my thoughts:

Park Run ROCKS! It is absolutely awesome! 

Everyone is very friendly, there are runners from every age group (as long as you are above 11 years old), there are mamas with strollers, runners with dogs… The volunteers are very helpful and knowledgable! All and all I had a great time running with Park Run last Saturday and I would definitely do it again! After the race your results are emailed to you by the end of the day and the email looks something like –>

So for every London based friend I highly recommend park run, and I hope this initiative will also start in more cities around the world!

London Marathon from a “cheering point” of view!!

Hi all 🙂

London  was ON FIRE this weekend!! The vibes were absolutely incredible!!

So here it is… The London Marathon from the spectators’ point of view! I was cheering with the awesome people of @Spinal Research of course, for #TeamSpinal, where about 132 people run for raising money and helping us to fight paralysis! Thank you all 🙂

On my way to the Spinal Research cheering point at mile 13… Despite the cold – it was about 44F (7C) at 9am – there were so many people already in an amazing mood gathering along the route!

Hand clappers, balloons, whistles, Spinal Research t-shirts, great people and buckets of positive vibes is apparently the recipe for having a blast and giving all the runners the necessary uplifting cheers 😉 !!

And then it stars!!!

I am always getting goosebumps seeing all the people with wheelchairs or blind runners passing by! The sheer determination and effort is visible on their faces!

And then of course the elite men athletes… speechless! You see them go by you so fast that it is hard to believe they have already run 13 miles!! The look on their faces was just focused! Like they can see the finish line and they just go for it!!

And then the real party starts 😀 A never ending amount of people starts flowing but you can’t possibly get bored! You just want to take it all in and cheer for everyone! Yell out as many names as you have time to read!! And see runners smiling and waving!

As for winners, even though ALL THE RUNNERS are winners where I am concerned, Kenyan, Kipchoge achieved a 2:03:05 – new course record – which left him 8 seconds shy of breaking the world record…

And for the women, Sumgong, got an amazing 2:22:58 despite all the trouble she faced during the race… She fell and hit her head on the tarmac and also a spectator tried to attack her (!?!?) during the race…

She still came out victorious! Respect!!

Finally let’s not forget that Tale of Two Runs’ favourite @Tina Muir who broke her own 2:40 and run an amazing 2:37:35!!! Congratulations Tina, you were amazing!! We spotted her at mile 13 and she looked absolutely focused and strong and had a huge smile one her face! 😀

Well, who said that there is only a “runner’s high”?? I was on a “spectator’s cheering high” all day long yesterday 😀 😀

Congrats to everyone who run!! So proud of you all!!! Hopefully next year I will be the one who people cheer for … 😉

A walk down memory lane…

How many times have I said – out loud that is- “I miss New York?”… Plenty I guess. This is the truth though…! So in fear that i will become predictable but also me having to keep my promise of always, ALWAYS, being truthful to you guys, I decided to share a few thoughts from this past weekend.

It all started because I was looking for a photo that @mymamus had on his phone. And then I just started looking at some of our old photos… I used to have them as well on my old phone – before it back flipped into the toilet bowl…

So there it was at 2am on a Sunday a trip down memory lane… Not ideal timing but is it ever?

As for entertainment goes, well as many of you know I am not a huge party animal but there is nothing better than spending an evening with friends 🙂 There is one thing that I absolutely loved about our old neighbourhood in Harlem in the summer. Stoop season! No no i am not kidding! I had some of the best nights of my life just like that –>

Yes i am holding the ingredients to the weirdest (and probably most unhealthy) dinner EVER! Pringles, jerky straw and chocolate milk… Well to my defense this was our last night in New York, everything was packed into this —>

and there was no food in the house left… So we just hit the 7/11 at about midnight since none of us could sleep from all the excitement (and being sad…).

Well trust me when I tell you i didn’t really plan on writing this post but I really felt like it… I hope you guys enjoyed this little trip down memory lane along with me and also for all my friends who are in NY or planning on visiting soon, don’t miss out on those few places!!!

Crafty Saturday!

Hi friends 😀

I hope you are having an awesome weekend! We are having a blast so far just chilling at home or relaxing in the park enjoying the sunshine…

So, I have been feeling extra crafty today (and yesterday) which could mean only one thing! More holes in our walls and a lot of glue on my fingers LOL 😛 Here is what I made today, which I really thing it is the least messy and easiest craft I have ever tried! Oh and did I mention that it costs almost nothing to make?

All you need is:

  • scissors
  • stick glue
  • thin rope
  • any kind of metal can – size depends on what you would like to make. I wanted to make a vase so I used this old tennis ball can. If you want to make a pencil holder a tin can from beans is the ideal size 😉

(Sitting on the floor is completely optional by the way 😉 If you have more space than me the results is potential better if you use a table LOL!)

Well, is as simple as that; apply -generously- the stick glue on the outside of the can and starting from one end roll the rope all around the can. Apply the glue on increments as you go so it want dry out. Also make sure that each wrap is nicely tighten with the previous one. Since this was meant to be a vase and I didn’t want the can to rust and ruin my flowers I put a small plastic bag in the tin can before I filled it with water.

I really believe it is very pretty 🙂 And extremely inexpensive! If you are into handmade gifts, things like this would be a great idea. It is also a kids’ friendly craft as long as an adult handles the scissors at the end.

Here are some other things I ‘ve made using the same technique:

The painting is simple cardboard and some cinnamon sticks, star anise and a golden marker. And the little basket is the newest addition to our kitchen. I used the same technique and wrap the ugly metal bar holder with the same rope! – the chilli peppers are from our own little plant! @mymamus loves spicy foods so they will come handy once they are ready!

North London Half Marathon Race Recap – #3 March !

Hi Friends!

What an exciting day today!!!!

My first half-marathon 🙂 It was an incredible experience! So many people and such a wonderful atmosphere despite the chilli weather. I had goosebumps all the way till mile 5! Going downhill and seeing so many people in front of you, it was like an ocean of colours and laughter! The spectators were amazing as well! Since most of the race was either through parks or residential areas there were quite a few of them! People got out of their homes at 9 am on a Sunday just to cheer on us – crazy runners they didn’t even know – and some of them were even giving us snacks,water or fruit, and little children were excitedly high – fiving us! EVERYONE was waving and cheering for us!

Ok, now all the facts:

  • North London Half Marathon – 13.1 miles – finishes at Wembley stadium! Impressive pretty much sums it up!!!
  • My official time was 2:06:15 – I know… I know… Didn’t get my first goal for 6 minutes BUT I did get my second which was NOT to stop at all or walk during the race and my third which was a sub 2:15 time!
  • There were 6,784 athletes in total

Now, the course was fairly easy – or at least I thought so…. You run for about 7 miles and the you come back the same way till about mile 10. Everything went pretty smoothly till that point where I had to run back the same way. There was one very big uphill (or so I thought) at mile 11 which I was already aware of (and mentally prepared for…) from going downhill on it in the beginning. And then the real fun started 😛 ! Two more shorter but extremely steep uphills appeared – I had no clue about it…. – between mile 11 and 12… Now THAT took some extra effort and a lot of pep talking to myself… I did it 😀 and didn’t even stop to walk up the hills, I somehow managed to run up all the way!!! YAY!! My pace though got considerably slower and that cost me my 2:00:00 goal… But I don’t fret! I am very happy with how the race went down!

Since they were so many people, @mymamus couldn’t find me at the start nor the finishing line so no photos from there – at least none of me – yet but the official ones come out tomorrow!

These two guys (#6 and #7) did incredibly amazing!! They were returning while I was still in mile 4 :O Their time was 1:02 and 1:04!!! Now that is some serious running…

I have to admit finishing at Wembley Stadium is magical!! This place is absolutely humungous!!

And of course we couldn’t not have the necessary celebratory brunch after the race at my favourite place 😀 Yes, I might got a little too excited with my coffee 😉

Finally, a huge thank you and congratulations to both the volunteers and the organizers! The race was PERFECT! I will definitely run it again!

 

Birthday weekend shenanigans :)

Hi Friends 🙂

I hope everyone’s week started of on a high note! Things are about to get seriously busy over here for us this week. With @dad_taleoftworuns visiting, a very important time point for my experiments at work and my half marathon fast approaching this coming weekend, I am bound to get a little less sleep than usual 😉 But no complaints whatsoever! I don’t mind one bit being busy doing all the things I love! Blessing!

So, what went on here during the weekend??? Well quite a few things actually since it was @dad_taleoftworun’s birthday weekend! We had three special surprises planned for him.

*Surprise #1 *

Friday afternoon we had lunch at the aqua shard – the Shard is the tallest building in London and is located very close to my work. The service and menu was great value for money!!! I recommend the market place lunch menu – 3 courses!

Once you  get the express elevator up to the 32nd  floor you are amazed by the great views of London city and the calming – surprisingly not pretentious – but glamorous atmosphere!

Our reservation was for 2:30pm and we were led to our table right away! Our table was literally the best spot in the entire restaurant!!

We got the duck salad and chestnut soup for starters – bit were simply delicious!!! And a glass of rosè wine – my favourite! For main we both had the steak on a bed of puree shallots and for dessert we decided on the cheese platter and the orange chocolate mousse! The portions weren’t huge but for lunch they were just right alongside the complementary freshly baked bread and butter!

So, according to @dad_taleoftworuns who is a foodie with loads of experience, it was well worth it 😀 Now you can all see where I inherited my love for food and cooking from! LOL!

Saturday morning I went for a 5 mile run (last “long” one before my half marathon) and focused on speed and form over distance. Did a good 8:30/mile average pace 😀 The day was gorgeous and spiring was in full bloom! I also got to sport my new outfit 😉 Loved it! There is ALWAYS time to squeeze in a run!

and then…

I met up with the boys for brunch at the nightingale cafe! Nothing better than yummy eggs Benedict to recharge after my run!

 

*Surprise #3 *

Sunday afternoon we had an incredible time at “Meantime Brewery” where we had the tour and beer tasting! The people and atmosphere were awesome and we had the time of our lives! We got to try 5 different types of their great beer – by try I mean actually drink quite a bit not just little samples – and also hear how each one is made. We go to try the barley the beers were made from and learn about the brewery’s history!

The tour was about 2 hours and we spent a little more than half drinking and learning all about beer.

Our tour guide “Big Al” was simply the best person for the job! He was extremely knowledgable and oh sooo funny!!!

The rest of the weekend was pretty quite 🙂 We walked around Greenwich (yes the one where the actual time is set 😉 ) and took one of the Thames’ ferries on our way back – I have to admit I am not a huge fan since I got a little seasick…

How to motivate yourself :)

Hi friends 🙂

Anyone who will ever tell you that they ‘ve never felt sluggish and unmotivated, that they ‘ve never felt like they don’t want to move an inch from the coach much less go run 10 miles, they are big fat liars…!! Everyone has these days, where running or working out feels like such a chore.

So here is what I do when I feel like that 🙂

1. Look at my favourite IG feeds

A few of those are mileposts by Dorothy Beal, the runner beans by Charlie and of course run to the finish by one of my favourites Amanda Brooks! Trust me when I tell you , a little scroll down through any of those IG feeds and you ‘ll be lacing up in no time! I know it definetely works for me.

2. Look through your training journal

First of, if you don’t have one I recommend you absolutely get one!! This is my favourite, it has no dates but the space is equivalent to a year. Documenting your progress will definetely make you want to work harder! So looking through the pages and seeing all the hard work you ‘ve put in will definetely motivate you to get moving.

3. Visualise your goal

I asked my role model athlete Maria Polyzou how she gets motivated in days when she really doesn’t feel like running or working out. And this was her asnwer to me: “Even though exercising can always make you feel healthy and clear your mind, there are always days when you don’t feel like training or running at all. Despite that there is always a way to change your perception and the way you feel and be ready for your run/training. Sometimes that could be simply a few moments of peace and quiet, your favorite song, a movie that motivates you or your own dream of what you want to achieve. And finally what always motivates me is MY GOAL! And this is what can be one of the biggest sources for motivation. SET YOUR GOAL AND SEE IT EVERY DAY… THIS IS WHEN YOU’LL NEVER FEEL TIRED.”

4. Put on your running clothes and lace up

Tell yourself you ‘ll just get dress for a run but not necessarily go 😉 Working out clothes are comfy after all right…? Well I can guarantee you that 90% of the times you do that, you ‘ll be out the door 5-10 minutes later 😛 Trick your mind I say…

5. Look at favourite motivational quotes and pictures

You can make a folder in your computer, or upload them on your IG feed or even print out a few and put them up on the wall. Whatever works for you… The logo of the marathon you are training for, the fitness model/athlete you look up to, a quote that inspires you. This are a few that work for me 🙂

6. Listen to your favourite song

I have a playlist of my very favourite songs that really make me want to run! I only get to listen to them when i m running though and this is what makes it special 🙂 If you listen to just one of them when you feel unmotivated I am certain that you ll be out the door running even before the end of the song. I have a little story to share here 😉

There was a day where I really didn’t feel like running and decided on a strength workout instead. I put on my music and one of my “running” songs came up on the radio. Well guess what happened?!? I dropped the weights and I was out the door 30” later running and had a pretty enjoyable run 😛 Perspective… All about perspective!

New PR and a pretty awesome race!!!

Hi friends!!! I hope you are having an awesome weekend so far!

It’s been pretty amazing for us around here! So long story short… New PR for my 10km race is ….. (drum roll…..) 55:10!!! I was ecstatic! I wanted a sub 1:00:00 10k for quite some time now!

Screen Shot 2016-02-21 at 15.21.24So, the race took place in the Queen Elizabeth Olympic park in London, which is a nice and very open space. Weather wise, well it wasn’t perfect but at least it wasn’t raining… It was quite windy though which made the uphill parts of the course quite hard. There were two long hills between 3k-5k and since I haven’t had much hill training lately they were quite challenging…

Start line up was at 10:10 am 🙂 There were quite a lot of people but the atmosphere was amazing! We all counted down to 0 together and started running! I don’t think i am in any of the start photos since @mymamus couldn’t spot me in the crowd – as I couldn’t spot them either…

The course was a 5K and a 10k together, so the 10k-ers had to do two laps of the same course. Here is me going into lap #2 🙂 time was 27:33…!  Also as you can see I am rocking my spinal research vest since this is what I support and trying to raise awareness for !! 😀 These amazing people are funding my PhD and running for such a great organisation is the least I can do to spread the word!!

The second lap was a little harder, since the wind had picked up quite a bit and I did start a little faster than what I would like, had an average pace of 8:50 min/mile 😀 Woo hoo!!!

When I saw the finish line, i did pick up my pace and it was also downhill which was great! I heard my name and time, and I heard @mymamus and @M&M_taleoftworuns cheering for me and yelling “Bravo” and “You made it”!!! Having a cheering party at the end of your race is THE BEST and my cheering party for the day was AMAZING!

I know, i know next time look ahead and smile – not my watch! But I wanted to get this sub 1:00:00 so badly and I had to make sure I stopped my watch on time lol !!!

Also another weird thing about the course was this massive sculpture – it looked like a crane to me – where you can actually go up the stairs and see the London view from the tallest sculpture in town… Oh well! Any of my London friends know what is it about?!?!

You know what else is amazing?!?! Having a mum at the end of the race that will make sure that you get your warm coat on stat! and you also have something to eat and drink stat! I think I have the best MIL ever!!!!

Yes, that is my creepy “devour sandwich” face in the subway!!! LOL!!! 😛 People were looking at me like “she is nuts” and I guess I am nuts indeed! As for my hair … Well I have no comments for it since it looks like they had as much fun as I did! LOL!

All and all this was an amazing race, with great atmosphere! People were cheering and runners were helping out each other! It always makes me very proud to be part of such great community of people when I see runners support each other (even people you don’t know) during a race! THIS is what running is all about! The camaraderie amongst runners is such an amazing feeling! Also the race was really well organised, with one water station (which I didn’t use) at the end of the first lap and then snacks (bananas and energy bars) at the end, and a very motivational spokesperson at the start and finish line 🙂
